发电机是指将其他形式的能源，转换成电能的机械设备。其工作原理都基于电磁感应定律，和电磁力定律。用适当的导磁和导电材料，构成互相进行电磁感应的磁路和电路，以产生电磁功率，从而达到电磁能量转换成电能的目的。发电机共分为：直流发电机和交流发电机；交流发电机又分为：同步发电机和异步发电机；交流发电机还可分为单相发电机与三相发电机。发电机是由外壳、定子、转子、整流二极管、碳刷和电压调节器所组成。现在的汽油电喷发动机上，采用的都是三相交流发电机。发电机在汽车上的作用，就是用来给车辆上的所有用电设备（不算起动机）供电和给蓄电池进行充电的部件。
